"Tuck That Shirt In"

2006, U.S.A., 5 min.
Director: Diane Paragas
Producers: Derek Phillips, Wendy Dubit
Executive Producer: Shango Blake, Principal IS 109

In every school across America, there is a fight for our children’s futures. It’s the battle between the powerful forces of street culture, consumerism and gang violence and the often unhip, underfunded and undervalued institution of education. It is against this backdrop that Principal Shango Blake of I.S. 109 in Queens, New York used Rap, Hip-Hop and other innovative teaching methods to turn a school at risk into a model of success, as evidenced by improved attendance and performance and decreased violence. Tuck That Shirt In - an exuberant song and music video written, performed and produced by the students, staff, and parents of I.S. 109 - portrays this transformation and issues a call-to-action to schools and communities everywhere. Produced by Jorma Productions and The Producers’ Project, the short features a cameo appearance by NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein.

"Tuck That Shirt In" Lyrics

First Verse, Principal Blake

I know this kid, his claim to fame
Is that he rocks name brand but he's a no name
And if he don't pass, I guess I'm the blame
His mom's in the hood, she's doing her thing

And I shake my head, like "what a shame"
Cause this is the tiger that I must tame
Now he claim king she claim queen
It's ok I'm about to end their reign

You don't understand man well let me explain
In this school only shoes no jeans
That's how it is, you can ask Giz
That's how it, that's how it, that's how it is

If you go to 109 man go-ahead
Brush your shoulders off, tuck your shirt in,
Go-ahead brush your shoulders off
Man put your shoes on

Go-ahead brush your shoulders off
Get that dirt off your shoulders...

Fun Facts

• All told, more than 50 teachers, 250 students and 75 parents participated in the production, performance and presentation of “Tuck That Shirt In.”

• While the program took place after school, filmmakers from The Producers’ Project and Civilian Studios worked with I.S. 109 to weave NYS performance standards, professional production processes and appropriate technologies into the school day:

- Math classes learned the music business and projected P & L from DVD sales
- English classes were involved with planning and scripting
- Marketing classes produced and promoted a successful red carpet premiere event

• Led by Shango Blake, Principal of IS109 and pioneer in using hip hop to enhance teaching & learning.

• Co-Produced by The Producers’ Project, a leader in providing accredited in-school, after-school, weekend and summer programs that deepen and enliven academic subjects and school activities.

“ The project has been educational and transformational for the school and the community. And we’re just beginning.”
- Principal Shango Blake

“ This is not just glitz. These students are learning the economics of production, the content of production, the discipline of production, the success of production and the hard work that goes into it….They’re taking something that’s contemporary culture and putting it to use for an old fashioned purpose, which is to say…a great education.”
- Joel Klein, Schools Chancellor
